Meet The Team

Johana Guarin Medina
Lecturer at the Universidad Tecnológica de Pereira, Colombia, in the areas of new media and visual culture. For several years she has dedicated herself to the recovery of the work of unpublished photographers in Colombia that allow us to understand from a broad panorama of culture, the expansion of photography in Latin America, the models of visuality and their relationship with collective memory.

Master in educational communication and Master in History. She is currently a PhD candidate in Design and Creation from the Universidad de Caldas (Caldas University).
​
Winner in 2015 of the AGN Research Incentives scholarship, from the Ministry of Culture of Colombia with the project La Foto López: Photographic Memories of Santa Rosa de Cabal, and in 2017 winner of the heritage research scholarship of the Secretary of Culture of Pereira, Colombia with the project Ridway's Photographs: Typologies of Portraiture in Pereira.
Leads Cultura Visual Research Group at the Universidad Tecnológica de Pereira, and her research topics are related to Visual Culture, Photography History and Archive.
She is currently a Visiting Scholar at Purdue University, USA.

Dr. Renée Gaarder, Project Manager
Renée received her Ph.D. in History from Purdue University in December of 2019 (Made in America: The Federal Music Project in the Midwest). She holds a B.A in Music History and Literature from the University of Idaho, an M.A. in Musicology from Brigham Young University (Thesis: Schumann’s Op. 25: Finding the Narrative Within), and an M.A. in History from Purdue University. Renée currently lives in Lafayette, Indiana with her husband Andrew, their daughter Genevieve, and their German Shepherd, Hilda.

Dr. Shannon McMullen
Shannon C. McMullen, PhD is an interdisciplinary artist and researcher who engages issues in contemporary culture at the intersection of nature, place, technology, and social inquiry through the practice of “critical gardening.” She has a collaborative studio practice (Studio McMullen_Winkler), whose members combine backgrounds in new media art, cultural studies, and digital design to produce speculative natures, time-based installations, and curated exhibitions.
The work of Studio McMullen_Winkler has been shown internationally at venues such as Festival Internacional de la Imagen XXII, Manizales, Colombia, Science Gallery, Dublin, Ireland; Art Center Nabi, Seoul, South Korea and ZKM Center for Art and Media, Karlsruhe, Germany.
McMullen is an associate professor at Purdue University jointly appointed in the Electronic and Time-Based Art Program and in the Program in American Studies which she currently directs.

Amelia Markert
Amelia is a student intern working with Purdue's Honors College to research and develop an exhibition for Visual Memories of Tippecanoe County. They are a rising senior at Purdue majoring in Anthropology with plans to continue to a master's program for museum studies. They are very excited to be working in this project and know it will help develop skills necessary for their future museum work.

Maesa Ogas
Maesa is a recent Food Science and German graduate, who minored in LGBTQ+ Studies and Fermentation Sciences. They grew up in West Lafayette and have always been fascinated with its history. As an avid photographer, they are very excited to have the opportunity to examine historical photos and find out more about their home.

Mallory Wells
Mallory Wells is a current student at Purdue University, and the John Martinson Honors College. Working with the team to develop the Visual Memories of Tippecanoe County exhibition, she is a rising senior who is majoring in History. Mallory plans to continue her education after Purdue, hoping to achieve a masters in Archiving and Library Sciences. She is very proud to present this project, as she has gained valuable experience with Purdue's Archives and Special Collections, as well as the histories of the communities within the Greater Lafayette area.
